THE EPIDEMIOLOGY OF THE GALLSTONES

Abstract

Gallstones are small, hard deposits that form in the gallbladder, a small organ located under the liver, responsible for storing bile. The bile aids in the digestion and absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins in the small intestine. Gallstones are a common and costly health problem worldwide, causing significant morbidity and mortality. This article will discuss the epidemiology of gallstones, including their prevalence, incidence, risk factors, and distribution, to better understand this complex and multifactorial disease.
