DENTAL CALCULUS AND ITS EFFECT ON PERIODONTAL TISSUES

Abstract

Dental calculus, commonly known as tartar, is a mineralized form of dental plaque that plays a significant role in the development and progression of periodontal diseases. Its presence on tooth surfaces creates a favorable environment for bacterial accumulation, leading to inflammation of periodontal tissues. This article examines the formation of dental calculus, its impact on periodontal structures, and the clinical consequences associated with its accumulation. The study also discusses preventive and therapeutic strategies aimed at minimizing periodontal damage. The findings confirm that dental calculus is a critical etiological factor in periodontal disease and requires early detection and professional management.
