THE EXTENT OF IDIOMS AND FORMULAIC LANGUAGE ADOPTED AND USED IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE WHILE COMMUNICATING IN PUBLIC DIPLOMACY AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
Abstract
: This research delves into the nuanced yet powerful role of idiomatic expressions and formulaic language in English communication within the spheres of public diplomacy and international relations. While English serves as the primary medium for global diplomatic discourse, it is often not the first language of many negotiators, diplomats, or global leaders. Yet, diplomatic language relies heavily on culturally embedded idioms, ritualized phrases, and diplomatic euphemisms to convey subtle meanings, build rapport, and maintain face-saving communication. Ultimately, this study contributes to applied linguistics, ELT, and diplomacy studies by highlighting the necessity of teaching formulaic competence as a critical component of communicative effectiveness in international diplomacy.
