THE ROLE OF TRANSLATION IN SHAPING COMPARATIVE LITERATURE: A CROSS-CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

Translation plays a central role in shaping comparative literature by enabling texts to move across linguistic and cultural boundaries. This study examines how translation functions as both a mediator and a transformative force in comparative literary studies. Using a qualitative literature review method, the paper analyzes key theoretical works and recent research. The findings demonstrate that translation not only facilitates access to foreign literary texts but also significantly influences interpretation, canon formation, and cross-cultural dialogue. At the same time, challenges such as loss of meaning, translator subjectivity, and issues of equivalence remain critical concerns. The study concludes that translation should be understood as an active, creative, and ideological process that contributes to the development of comparative literature.
