REFRACTOMETRIC ANALYSIS: PRINCIPLES, INSTRUMENTATION, AND APPLICATIONS IN PHARMACEUTICAL ANALYSIS
Abstract
Refractometric analysis is a rapid, non-destructive physicochemical analytical technique based on the precise measurement of the refractive index of substances. The refractive index is an intrinsic optical property that reflects the interaction of light with matter and is directly influenced by the molecular structure, composition, and concentration of a sample. Due to its simplicity, low operational cost, and minimal sample preparation, refractometry has found widespread application in pharmaceutical, chemical, and food industries. In pharmaceutical analysis, this method is particularly valuable for quality control of liquid dosage forms, solvents, excipients, and injectable preparations. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the theoretical principles of refractometry, describes commonly used instrumentation, outlines analytical procedures, and highlights its major applications and limitations in pharmaceutical analysis.
